Question about adding fields

Ok, I am using 4.4.2.

Say I create a field called, _state and I set it to "need to register". It shows on the registration field form, but the info is not being added to the db for the person profile. How do I accomplish this? Also could someone explain the uses for "public vs. private, as well as active? I assume that "need to register" does just that and the field has to be filled when registering, and that "show to register" only shows that field, I guess as "optional"?

Not sure why you can't see the info after the person registers. I'm pretty sure public vs. private has to do with whether or not the information shows in the user's profile and on the member list.

I (obviously) haven't done extensive testing on this, but I also believe your assumption about need to register vs. show to register is correct - the latter makes it optional.
